The Buddha was carved directly into a cliff standing 71-meter (233 ft) tall with shoulders 92 ft wide and ears 23 ft long overlooking the point where three major rivers meet. The carving began in 713 during the Tang Dynasty and took 90 years to complete, aiming to bring safety to ships traveling through dangerous waters.
